CLA Website Updates

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Monday, April 26, 2010
The CLA website is scheduled to go live April 27, 2010.  After months of planning and development, the construction is complete and we are ready to move in.   You won't notice too much difference; however, over the period of the next few months the site will transform into a true community and networking website for the CLA members.

I'll send more updates as progress continues.

Outcomes Magagzine

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Thursday, March 25, 2010
I've been working on transferring Outcomes Magazine.  This is turning out to be an involved process, downloading the copy, creating pages and categories, and setting up 301 redirects to the page URL.

The previous 2 issues (Spring 2010 and Winter 2009) are available on the new site.  The first issue took about 4 hours, the second about 2.5 as the process was refined.  Other issues may take a week or so to complete.  However, need to focus on database and DNS for an April 1 or soon there-after deadline.

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Mobile

We are researching the capability of providing mobile iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad access to the new CLA member website.  This free app would be provided through iTunes and the appStore.

I'd like your feedback.  Please read the attached PDF ... would you use this?

Member Database Import

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Database Synchronization

Today we are going analyzing the current database of the CLA members and see what fields need to be imported into the YM database.

Here is the process:

1) Define current data fields
2) Configure YM database to match
3) Research additional YM configuration and enhancements
4) Download current DB
5) Import to YM
6) Test, evaluate, and modify YM database

When the site goes live, there will be support needed on a timely basis as login questions will inevitable.

 * YM is YourMembership.com hosting services.

Online Store / Download

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Tuesday, March 9, 2010
I've received the online eBook store content from http://www.christianleadershipalliance.org/store/

My estimate is that it will take about 5 hours to re-create the store.

BENEFIT OF NEW STORE:
After working with the store for just a bit, I'm really impressed by the ability and functionality on a couple of levels:

1) Ease of maintenance of the store.  It is very easy to add, modify, and update digital download products.  You can even assign different price discounts based upon membership level or coupons.

2) Integration.  The previous store required a separate login.  Now, once a member logs in, they have access to ALL community features, including discounts on products.

3) There is a new product being developed, called 'Faithful Stewards'.  There are three products:  HD video file, PowerPoint file, and PDF.  This store can handle this as a single, compressed zip file for download.  This is a feature that is to be showcased at the April San Diego conference.

There are more services that I'm learning ... stay tuned.

PS.  We probably need to collect CA tax for online sales?

URL Page Transition Work

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Tuesday, March 9, 2010
Updated: Tuesday, March 9, 2010
301 Redirect

Today has been hours of tedious but very important work ... and hours more ... taking a break and getting some hot coffee.

Since the new site uses a specific CMS that is integrated into a community membership and social network service, every page will be a different address or URL.  I've been setting what is called a '301 'redirect' for existing pages.  This means that when the domain is switched over to the new web site, all old pages will be redirected to the new site in such a manner that search engines will acknowledge / update their listings and users will not see a broken link when clicking on a link to an old page.

SEO Info

During the process of setting up the many 301 redirects, I noticed all existing pages on the old site have problematic meta tags for SEO.  For example: a) empty Description meta tags; b) common Keyword meta tag ... no unique tags.  Adding Description meta tags will greatly help and increase the possibility that search engines index other pages.  Keywords are important; however, they are a bit degraded in importance as content is generally extracted from the page.

An XML site map listing every page will be important ... the syntax of the new pages includes a question mark ... something Google is not too fond of; however, easily addressed through a properly formed XML site map that is easy to make.

CLA e-Newsletter

Posted By Dwight Anderson, New Scribe Media, Wednesday, March 3, 2010
Updated: Wednesday, March 3, 2010
Today we are going to be discussing the e-Newsletter.  The following is a short list of the main issues that we are going to talk about:

  1. Subscription and list management process (there are both members and non-members).
  2. Archiving
  3. Distribution (the services used to send out them emails)
  4. Creation of the e-Newsletter

Our new service provides distribution to members via both bulk (send directly to the email address) and messaging (sent to the members profile area).  The new service also allows messaging within group types.

We need to understand how 1) the member email database (currently at AMC) is merged with 2) CT email list database.

Engstom Institute Content

The EI content has been moved to the development site.  This involved over 200 documents in 12 categories.

EI Groups

The EI content is organized into 12 categories or Professional Topics of Interest.  We have created 12 Group (link located on the left side of the page).  These groups will allow you to participate with other CLA members in that topic of interest.  You can join as many groups as you wish.
